Discuss about the Sustainable Development Goals and Empowerment.
Answer:
Introduction:
Sustainable Development Goals are guidelines that are used by all nations for achievements of better sustainable future globally. They address major world challenges which include peace and justice, poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, climate and prosperity(World Health Organisation, 2017). Participatory evaluation is an approach that involves all the stakeholders of a given program in the evaluation process. Good health and wellbeing are the third Sustainable Development Goal that was created to make sure that, by 2030, all individuals will be having quality health through prevention of avoidable diseases(Guegan, Suzán, Kati-Coulibaly, Bonpamgue, & Moatti, 2018). Various countries have developed programs and laws in order to enforce people’s good health and wellbeing. Chile has developed a Law of Food Labelling and Advertising specifically for Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) to combat high rates of obesity and overweight in the region(Severi et al., 2014). In Chile, the prevalence of obesity among children under the age of four is about 20%. Among pregnant women, obesity has increased from 12.9% to 32.7% between the year 1987 and 2000(Severi et al., 2014). Currently, Chile is the leading country in Latin America with the highest number of children with obesity. About 10% of all children have obesity in Chile and one in ten deaths of the general population in the country is either caused by obesity or associated to it(Severi et al., 2014). Due to these facts, the Government of Chile enacted a Law on Food Labeling and Advertising in order to give people enough insights when purchasing GMO foods to decrease rates of obesity in the region(Godfrey, 2014).
Participatory evaluation of the law involves all stakeholders who include the government, all citizens, schools, public and private companies associated with GMO production and businessmen including retailers and whole sellers (Ramerez, Sternsdor?, & Pastor, 2016). The role of the government is to implement the law by making all the companies to label all GMO foodstuff as genetically modified in order to make consumers accept the risks associated with such products while purchasing (Ramerez et al, 2016). In addition, the government prohibits genetically modified food to be sold at schools and their advisement to children below fourteen years (Ramerez et al, 2016). All public and private school should take the responsibilities of teaching children the risks associated with GMO foods and healthy alternatives of such products. In addition, the schools are not supposed to feed children with genetically modified foods in school canteens(Godfrey, 2014). Parents should take a role of purchasing healthy foods for their children at home and teaching them the needs of not consuming GMO foods. All private and public companies producing genetically modified foods should label them as obtained through genetically modification, if they have high calories or salts and the risk associated with such products (Ramerez et al, 2016). There are various methods that the general population can use to participate in the law in order to promote quality health and wellness. These include reporting products that are not well labeled, prohibiting their children from eating genetically modified foods, participating in public campaigns that teach about healthy foods, and spreading the need of purchasing healthy products to other Nursing people and their children.
