Question:
The metaphor draws attention to past glories of Ozymandias. The King of kings, Ozymandias, has memories when the past was great, and he truly was king of kings. He was powerful and had a statue erected in his honor.
Answer:
Ozymandias was a poem written by Percy Shelley. It tells the story of a powerful king who fell and is lamenting about his days of glory, and the vanity of those days.
The poem is rich with figurative speech. The most important, however, is the metaphor which describes the shattered visage, “whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneers of cold command…” The metaphor is used to best draw attention on the bad condition that the figure finds itself in. Once grand and glorified, it now exists in a state of neglect, only reminiscing the past days when all was well. His happy face has been replaced with a sneer ad frown.
The metaphor draws attention to past glories of Ozymandias. The King of kings, Ozymandias, has memories when the past was great, and he truly was king of kings. He was powerful and had a statue erected in his honor. Time passes on, and the king’s fortunes dwindle. His once great kingdom is no more, and even his statue falls into disrepair. In this state, the poet draws the reader to the belief that no matter how grand a structure, and no matter how powerful a king is, they can always fall and be abandoned by those who glorified them. Then, they become bitter and lonely, while the world moves away from them.
The poem is sombre, and tells of how the king was at one time powerful, to a point where he could easily mock others for their inadequacies. As the poet says of the king’s lament, “The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed”. This can be taken to mean that the king had a strong position over the people he presided over. However, the king was also generous. He catered for the needs of his people from his heart. This has however come to nothing. The good deeds and bad deeds have all been forgotten, as he himself has been. In this, the poet has used the metaphor described above, and the other passages to create a formal and sad mood for the poem.
The poem tells of a time that civilizations may be colossal, powerful and feared by all. However, a time may come when the power vanishes, and the people who were there to give praises and glory to the civilization or kingdom are no more. This will result in a sad state for the elements of power that are left behind – from the symbols such as the statues to the kings and other powerful people.
