Question
To study how human relations are being managed and handled through observations, self-awareness, analysis, and application.
Answer
Introduction
Human relationships are based on communication between individuals, and the only positive communication is assertive communication. Coping with different individuals in different settings is a complex concern and needs to be guided by theoretical frameworks, of which communication styles and conflict resolution are the two significant ones (Bélanger et al. 2015). Conflict resolution or conflict management is the means of limiting the negative characteristics of any conflict, thereby enhancing the outcomes on the whole. The style in which an individual communicates with the other person is pivotal is establishing a suitable relationship between the two (Hybels 2014).
Profile
In this section, I would reflect on my relationship with my team leader in my workplace. Challenges come up at certain instances while communicating with the team leader, especially when there is a need of a complex problem solving. These challenges are usually overcome through establishing a clear and transparent communication while maintaining dignity and showing respect. My team leader is competent enough to handle difficult situations and exhibit leadership and management skills. Effective communication leads to a suitable relationship between the team leader and me. In the case of any conflict, my lead takes the responsibility of solving the issue through justified means and taking the full responsibility. The importance of verbal as well as non-verbal skills is recognised in due course. My team lead discusses any conflict issue with me directly and avoids keeping any discreet positions. The lead also convenes the entire team to resolve any matter leading to a rift between my team. In this regard, I must mention that we are provided with fair chances to put forward our grievances and express out views and concerns. A tight agenda is followed while communicating with the team lead over any conflicting issues. While solving issues, he avoids using technical terms and jargons and does not resort to ‘corportae speak’. The important matters are outlined in written form. The lead understands the aims and objectives of the organisation, and therefore the communication is based on facts and figures.
I had conducted two peer interviews each of which I would highlight hereby. The first person I interviewed was my classmate who works part time at a departmental store. He was interviewed regarding his communication with his store manager Mr S at times of conflict management. The manager is of African American origin and has a strong cultural viewpoint. My classmate reported that he does not face many challenges while communicating his store manager, which is a positive side of the conflict management. However, challenges come up regarding placement of goods in the store to which the manager is helpful and has a guiding attitude towards my classmate. The store management is supportive of conflict resolution between employees and lays provision for regulations and policies that all employees are to abide by. The strategy adopted by him is avoidance. The key elements for being a successful team player, as highlighted by the interviewee are strong verbal and non-verbal communication skill, empathetic and friendly attitude and strong leadership skill. A manager can be said to be a good manager if he looks after the concerns of the employees and resolves them in a justified manner. A bad manager or co-worker is one who does not consider solving the issues of a fellow worker with coordination.
The second person I interviewed was my classmate who works part time at a healthcare centre. He was interviewed regarding his communication with his supervisor Mr J at times of conflict management. The supervisor was of American origin and a staunch believer in ethical principles. As per the interviewee, he has to overcome issues in conflict management with the supervisor pertaining to record keeping. The supervisor makes attempts to resolve the issue, and this prevents clashes between my classmate and the supervisor. The supervisor holds an open discussion with the interviewee n order to discuss the matter. In perspectives of the interview, the supervisor considers suitable conflict resolving strategies that can lead to a better workplace.
Comparison analysis
From the peer interview, the common theme that emerges is that managers and supervisors often consider adequate conflict resolution strategies to foster a suitable working environment. Conflicts are resolved through adaptations in leadership style and communication skills. This eliminates any possible confusion and fosters a happy and healthy workplace. However, the means of conflict resolution may be different for different individuals.
Conclusion
Conflict management is only possible when there is a constant flow of communication between the two parties. For any organisation it is necessary that all conflicts are resolved at the earliest in order to foster an environment of productive work, leading to an increased satisfaction level of all employees and managers.
