Answer:

Completed in the year of 1814, The Third May of 1808, is one of the most recognized paintings by Francisco Goya (Zappella). It is a very interesting piece of art considering the central idea it depicts, and the symbolism it employs in the painting. It is important to mention that the effective use of color and line pattern has made the painting doubly impressive. The reels portrayed in the painting are shown to wear bright colored apparel, the soldiers are found to don grey colored dress. This has been deliberately done as the colorful apparel helps in showing the rebels more humane, while the dull and monotonous colors of the soldiers’ apparels show them as the servants of the government.
With the help of the painting, Goya tried to explain the struggle of the peasants against the oppressive ad highly tyrannical government they had been working for. The painting is also found to allude to the peasant revolt that occurred in Madrid during the Spanish War of Independence against the French rulers. It is very important to note that the message which Goya tried to convey is an importance to shun anything that is destructive, including war nad destruction of innocent lives. He was well-aware that despite the inhuman atrocities inflicted on the lives of the poor peasants, justice would always remain denied to them (Goulart). Even if the audience is devoid of the knowledge of the historical background of the painting, they can still decipher the hidden message behind the painting. In order to make his painting easily comprehensible to the masses, Goya has not only colored the apparel of the soldiers with bright colors, distinguishing them from the soldiers or the oppressors, but has also shown one of them lying dead,  while the other raising arms while surrendering and succumbing to the stronger authority. While the soldiers with the heavy guns in their hands are being shown to be merciless people, recklessly destroying lives, the rebels are being shown as martyrs who are sacrificing their lives for the greater good of the community. Again, similarly, Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1863, by Timothy O’Sullivan is also a painting where he artist vividly documents an portrays the violence taking lace during the war. Such subtle paintings with strog political messages help in raising awareness of the public about the atrocious society they are living in, and compels them to empathize with the oppressed ones, and take u necessary actions for rising to the occasion.
