Question:
Describe about the Psychotherapy and Counseling For Depression?
Answer:
1
If depression is suspected in a person then it is very important to notice the person for some more time before any action is taken. If depression is noticed for one or more weeks then being silent will not be helpful either to the person who is suffering or to their loved ones. First and foremost, the person should be made aware of the change in behavior that is seen in him. This will make them conscious and they will also be willing to fight. On the other end, the person should be made to feel confident that the people around him are concerned about his welfare and they are willing to help him. This will motivate the individual to communicate their problems. If some problem persists and if they are not ready to communicate then they can be taken to a professional. The professional will listen to their problem and help them to understand the state of depression and also the ways by which, the depression and its symptoms can be fought.
2
If an individual is involved in mood disorders then they should take help from their family and friends. They should talk to them and understand the change in behavior that is being noticed by the loved ones. If the person is suffering from mood disorder for the first time then they will be confused with regards to what is happening to them. The sufferer will feel that they are not able to sleep, feel tired, loss motivation and enthusiasm in things that once seemed to be interesting and they will feel a sense of pain. During the initial days, they may think that they are suffering from some physical problem and their mental health is completely fine. The professional will be able to help the patient to understand that depression affects the mental as well as the physical wellbeing of the individual. A doctor who has a proper understanding of the mental disorder will be able to understand the clearly seen symptoms and signs.
3
The depressed person will be confused because they might have never experienced any such thing in the past. The sufferer will be able to understand that they are behaving in a different way but they will not be able to help themselves. Most of the sufferers will try to control their emotions but they will not be able to do that and hence, this may lead to even more confusion. Initially, they may feel that they are going through a lot of physical pain but when this gets prolonged, they may get conscious. Few may visit a doctor while others will decide to relax for some time so that they can regain their health back (Gregory 2009).
4
William Styron in his walking wound stated that if a person is suffering from some severe health concern then they will be admitted in the hospital and over there, they will see that they are tied to bed with various wires. This will make the physically wounded person to be bedridden and hence, they will not be able to move freely but that may not be the condition of someone who is suffering from mental depression. A person suffering from mental depression will look normal and no one will be able to understand that they are suffering from depression, by just looking at them. A person enters into a state of depression when they are overburdened with social and family pressures. The person who is facing depression may not be able to understand on how to react to any situation because plenty of thoughts and anger will be running in the minds of the individual. The sufferer will not be able to smile because he will not be able feel the happiness that is around him.
5
It is very important to help the sufferer to overcome the burden that they are having within themselves. The sufferer should be advised to speak up the problem rather than that of keeping things to themselves. If a person is upset about something or if they receive a bad news then they should communicate the same with people around. This will make them feel relaxed. Apart from just sharing the problem, the suffering can share the feelings that have and also details of the incident that upsets them. If the sufferer has taken some bad decision then they can communicate about it to someone rather than that of just feeling guilty and keeping things to yourself. If the sufferer feels that they are alone and they don’t have anyone to share their problem with then they can cry. A loud cry will make the sufferer feel good and relaxed. It is recommended to go for a loud cry when there is no one around to share the problem with (Hedman 2014).
6
One can never expect a depressed person to share their emotion with a family member or depression. The sufferer will feel that if they get to know about their depression the environment in the family will change. Apart from that, if one of the family members is suffering from depression then the relatives will be stressed about the condition of the family member. Committing suicide is one of the thoughts that normally come to anyone who is depressed. If the relatives get to know that someone in the house is getting these thoughts then they may be scared and restlessness. There are high chances that the relatives may get over-conscious. Few of the relatives may also feel guilty as they may think that they couldn’t give time to the sufferer and that is one of the reasons due to which they are suffering. The relatives will also try hard to help the sufferer come out of depression and this will make sufferer feel even guiltier.
7
The spouse, relatives and friends are personally connected to the sufferer and hence, they may get emotional when they get to know about the problem that their family member is facing. The sufferer may think of the problems that they may face when the family members get to know about the problem. This thought may stop the person from communicating their problems and emotions to people whom they know. A trained counselor or doctor is always highly recommended to help the sufferer from getting rid of depression. The counselor and doctors are well trained and hence, they are good with listening and they are also good with motivating the sufferer to speak more about the problem. The therapeutic benefits of counseling can be gained when it is spoken to a professional and hence, sufferers opt for that rather than that of talking to family members.
8
If the sufferer communicates that he is suffering from depression then the listener should not start giving any random advice. Most of the listeners will start with advice rather than that of just listening to what the patient is saying. One needs to understand that they are not the right set if people who can advise the sufferer. The only advice that any listener should give would be to meet a counselor or professional who can really help them. This advice will be taken positively only when it comes from a person who is aware of the problem of the sufferer. If the sufferer has communicated the problem then the listener should give this advice. This advice cannot be given randomly. It is the responsibility of the listener to listen and understand if the person is really suffering from depression. Once it is confirmed that one is suffering from depression, the advice of meeting a professional can be given (Weissman 2014).
9
If a professional is involved in the therapeutic counseling they should ensure that they are aware of the complete situation of the patient. If they are not aware of the complete situation then helping the patient would be difficult. Similarly, the professional should have a profound desire to help the patient. Having a profound desire may not be sufficient. It is very important for the professional to express their intention to the patient. This will motivate the patient to express more and this will help the counselor to get deeper insights into the health of the patient.
10
Rules that the professional needs to adhere when they are treating a depression patient are as follows: –
The professional should try and collect more and more information about the mood disorders of the patient. The therapists can take their time before they start with the treatment but having in-depth knowledge is one of the best ways to render help.
The therapists should continuously look for ways by which they can improve the interaction tactics with the patient. The more the therapist communicates with the patient, the patient will express more but the therapist should look for ways to improve their communication strategies.
The therapist should appreciate the efforts the efforts that the patient is putting to communicate with the therapist. The appreciation will motivate the patient to communicate more and hence, this will be helpful for the therapist (Carey 2005).
