Question
Pick one “big question” from the list on the bottom of the page and write about how a Social Psychologist would address the question using each of the previous four themes of social psychology. To reiterate, your response should discuss the core “big question” with the following themes in mind:
Theme 1. How would a Social Psychologist approach the question scientifically?
Theme 2. How might a Social Psychologist consider the influence of both the person and the situation when approaching the question?
Theme 3. How might a Social Psychologist consider one’s subjective experience (i.e., construal) when approaching the question?
Theme 4. How might a Social Psychologist apply social psychological principles to explain what is going on in the world in response to the question?
This critical thinking and integration can include your hypotheses about the causes and consequences of the question, but please be sure to think through your answer instead of writing the first thing that comes to mind.
Big Questions
1: Are we fundamentally selfish creatures, or can people ever be truly altruistic?
2: Why do people hurt each other? How does genocide happen?
3: What makes life worth living? How can we be happier?
4: Are we sheep? Is our behavior determined by the situation or do we have free will? Can we still have free will if our behavior is influenced by the situation?
Answer
Why people hurt each other? How does genocide happen?
Theme 1: How would a Social Psychologist approach the question scientifically?
The role of a social psychologist in his or her field of study is to examine how people behave, feel and act in a given community context according to Smith, Mackie, & Claypool, (2014). In the study of why people hurt each other, a social psychologist would organize a survey to get the truth of the matter. Almost everyone in society has experienced hurt in his or her life. The difference that comes in is the experience. The social psychologist will collect the response from various people in society and recommend the best approach when someone is undergoing heartbreak. When it comes to the issue of genocide, the mass killing of people does not happen without a specific reason. However, self-awareness is a fundamental aspect that helps the social psychologist to identify the causes. It can be a disagreement between two communities or war between the citizens and the government.
Theme 2: How might a Social Psychologist consider the influence of both the person the situation when approaching the question?
When approaching the issue of people hurting each other and the cause of genocide, Smith, (2015) argues that the social psychologist communicates with people he or she is surveying in face to face basis according to Dovidio, Piliavin, Schroeder & Penner, (2017). The action would assist in getting direct feedback from the participants. However, the social psychologist should consider using face to face communication if the environment is not hostile. Apart from the mode of communication, another consideration is inclusivity. When doing a survey, different parties should participate in the study to improve the accuracy of the data. The last thing is how to analyze the information from all the participants in the survey. It should be appropriate because the outcome is helpful in restoring the wrong image of a particular community.
Theme 3: How might a social psychologist consider one’s subjective experience when approaching the question?
McDougall, (2015) says that, Construal is the way an individual understands what is happening in the world. Construal is a crucial aspect to social psychologist while studying on why people hurt each other and the reason why genocide happens. The reason why studying it is important is that genocide may find an individual unaware. However, he or she needs to react to what is happening in the surrounding. When it comes to the issue of hurting each other, the experience one might have gone through will make his or her to view the world differently. For instance, if one is hurt, he or she a hate certain people or gender from that day.
Theme 4: How might a social psychologist apply social psychological principles to explain what is going on in the world in response to the question?
In using the social psychological principles, a social psychologist can consider issues like the way members of the society build their attitude concerning the reason why people hurt each other and the cause of genocide in the community. There can be difference in the way these two issues take place in the world, from that point the victim may have a different method of forming an attitude towards a given society or a group of people. The other principle is social cognition which elaborates the way people think in society towards a given issue. All these factors persuade an individual to come up with a conclusion concerning an issue.
