Is high self-esteem a positive quality for individuals and relationships?
Answer:
The issue of self- esteem has developed as everyday word where numerous individuals have engrossed determinations on improving self-esteem. Indeed it is exemplified that high self-esteem tends to cause various positive results and benefits. Self-esteem refers to an individual’s independent assessment of his or her worth as a person. An individual with a high self–esteem envisages him or herself praiseworthy though does not inevitably contemplate him or herself better than others. (Sprecher, Brooks, & Avogo, 2013, p.270). High self–esteem in a person entails the outlooks of self-respect and self-acceptance rather than the feelings of supremacy and privilege which are characteristic for egotistic self-views. Indeed high self-esteem is believed to influence if an individual leads a satisfying life. A various body of research holds a view that the person’s level of self-esteem has significances for the well-being and accomplishment in essential life realms.
Moreover, high self-esteem makes an individual reasonably enthusiastic to contribute in groups as well as disapprove the group’s tactic. Also, individuals with high self-esteem level tend to possess higher happiness since they can have contented results irrespective of stress or other conditions. Furthermore, high self-esteem does not inhibit an individual from drug abuse and engaging in early sex. Instead, it fosters experimentation that increases early sexual activity or drug abuse (Sprecher, Brooks, & Avogo, 2013, p.271). Mostly, persons with high self-esteem incline to possess delinquency behavior. In other words, the utmost and deepest proportions of dishonest and intimidation are found in different subsections of high self-esteem. As a rule individuals with high self- esteem are happier, more active and in various ways endowed in better ways to deal with their environment.
Individuals enjoying high self- esteem assert to be more likable and pretty as well as to enjoy a healthier association and to make better impresses on others than individuals with low self -esteem. High self-esteem will influence relationship satisfaction in which a person feels they are worthy of being loved and accepted by others. Indeed high self-esteem makes person have a fundamental feeling of deserving their fair shares such as love and dignity and also persist in working through challenging circumstances which ensue in relationships (Kuster, Orth, &Meier, 2013, p.671). Besides, high self-esteem enable people to like themselves and believe they are worthy of being cared for by others hence they are unlikely to stay in the abusive relationship as compared with low self -esteem individuals. In the same way, individuals in a romantic relationship tend to enjoy a higher self -esteem as they are viewed more positively by other people.
Nevertheless, high self-esteem contributes to attachment-related participation in which person with high self-esteem tends to increase the relational familiarity with the spouse to safeguard themselves against experiences of denunciation which might reduce the companion’s relationship fulfillment. Also, persons with high self-esteem are more confident about their ability to achieve goals and therefore are likely to be more effective in establishing and maintaining a fulfilling and satisfying relationship. Mostly, high self—esteem is related with greater initiative and activity (Kuster, Orth, &Meier, 2013, p.670). In this instance, persons with high self-esteem do more things. Overall having high self-esteem is beneficial for an individual’s romantic relationships. Also starting a romantic relationship leads to high self-esteem only if the romantic relationship is well working, stable and last for a certain period.
