Questions
1. According to Popper what are the three requirements the empirical theoretical system of science must fulfil. How do these requirements guarantee falsifiability?
2. What different shared practices make up Kuhnian normal science? How does normal science differ from pre-paradigm science and science in crisis?
Answers
1. The three major requirements that need to be fulfilled by the empirical theoretical system of science as was proposed by Karl Popper refer to the synthetic nature of the system. The synthetic nature helps in the proper representation of the possible world that is non-contradictory in nature. The philosopher had further stated that the empirical theoretical system of science should abide by the demarcation criteria and that it should be able to represent the real world made of possible experience rather than represent a world of metaphysical conditions (Bryant, 2016). The third major requirement that the empirical theoretical system of science must fulfil is the distinction from the other systems and thereby represents the world of experience.
These requirements tend to guarantee the falsifiability due to the fact that the criteria that are identified in these cases need to be tested. The falsifiability of the requirements can be guaranteed through the testafiability of the conditions.
2. The normal science as discussed by Thomas Samuel Kuhn in the famous book entitled “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” is defined as the detail that is slowly accumulated in accordance with the broader theories that are established. The normal science does not challenge or question the several assumptions that underlie the theory (Sanbonmatsu & Sanbonmatsu, 2017). The major activities that are required to be completed by the normal scientists include the tasks of articulation of the paradigm, evaluation of the key facts of the paradigm as well as testifying the points of empirical appraisal for the given paradigm.
Normal science is majorly based on the scientific achievements of the past. The normal science is majorly based on the issues that are cited by the other researchers as the factors that have helped in the completing the researches for their practices. The science in crisis and pre-paradigm science on the other hand fades away with the strengthening of the paradigms that follow.
