Question
Challenges in Identifying Mental Disorders
Most mental disorders lie on a continuum with “normal” behavior at one end. For example, nearly everyone has a fear of something, but it does not rise to the level of a phobia. A behavior may seem abnormal in one context but completely normal in another context. These two aspects show why it can be challenging to properly identify mental disorders.
Use the following question to direct your thoughts and organize your essay:
Why is determining abnormal behavior or a mental disorder so difficult?
To develop your essay, keep in mind issues such as the role of social norms in defining the abnormal, the multiplicity of indicators of what is abnormal, the stigma suffered by those identified as abnormal, and finally the need for objectivity in dealing with the concept.
Answer
Challenges in Identifying Mental Disorders
Introduction:
When a person can cope up his or her every challenge to live normally in society is said to be mentally healthy. One can think properly, can handle every emotion, and can behave regularly with its environment. It means social involvement should be proper functioning with every state of life (Mind, 2017).
Research Question
Discussion:
I feel some people cannot adjust with stress, anxiety and behaves abnormally. However, this is a relative issue as people react differently with same incident. So, most of the time it has gone to be under-reported with the resultant under-treatment. There are different factors, which makes it a challenge to diagnose. As mostly under-diagnosed, a person suffering some mental disorder is failing to get proper medical help. This cause further complications and things become more difficult. People still fear of social injustice. In this century even in first world I go through that it is a stigma to be diagnosed mental illness. People have no idea about future course of action of where to go and what is the borderline of mental disorders (Bbc, 2012).
Analysis:
I can identify some signs and symptoms, which make me, understand that a person is suffering from mental disorder. Some of most common mental health disorders I have seen are:
When a person suddenly withdraws from regular routine
Started confinement
Always feeling low, unsatisfied, stressed
Totally different habits
Moods are changing without vital cause
Sudden changes in physic
Sudden changes in regular sex drive
Addiction develops
Serious inability to perform previous daily activities(Mayoclinic, 2015)
If I notice above changes in any of my relative, friends or community person, I would first make that person to understand about disorder. However, generally people deny problems associating with behaviour as being treated differently in society. General people still reacts strangely and makes it a stigma. Therefore, people do not want to take medical help in fear of social bullying. I will make people that much aware that the afflicted person definitely seek medical help to back to normalcy. I know it is a tricky job but still I will point out abnormal behaviours or some sudden changes in my familiar people. I would urge to not take it privacy breaching or I am trying to malign that person. If the affected person denies me, I will inform his or her relatives or family members or neighbours that they make him or her understand about abnormalities and importance of medical help.
Conclusion:
I never criticize anyone for irregular behaviour, which makes me painful. Normally that affected person is behaving not even realizing the abnormalities. I would prefer to bring that person to a counsellor and would try to be present during therapy or treatment. I would always stand by his or her side to bring back to regular routine like before and interact with people not to bully anyone suffering from mental illnesses. It is my social responsibility.
Therefore, society has a big role to approach towards mental disordered people. That afflicted person need assistance from his or her near and dear ones. Society should not bully for any abnormal behaviour otherwise, that person can withdraws further. Everybody should support if a familiar person is suffering from some mental illnesses to become a part of therapy.
