Explain your answer.
Would the basic consent form for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy be understood by the average person in the United States with a reading ability of a typical 8th grader? Explain your answer.
Describe at least three steps health care providers can take in order to ensure patients understand their care as well as prepare them to give acceptable consent for the procedure.
Provide a brief explanation of the importance of keeping abreast with health care trends and issues, including the relationship to ethics, law, and effective medical communications.
Answer:

The patient consent form on the surgical procedure on Gallbladder removal informs the patient adequately in regards to their medical rights. As seen on the videos on self –determination is necessary for doctors, because informed consent is about avoiding being sued, for patients is about getting the most suitable treatment. Right decisions can be made with the right information. One should ask themselves three questions (Daily Glass of Red Wine, 2013):-

   What are the treatment options
   Outcomes of medical decisions
   How likely the results may occur

In the consent form on gallbladder removal, we see detailed information in regards to the definition of the surgical procedure, the effects, the benefits, the risks and the possible complications after the procedure. The information given in the form is sufficient to help the patient in the process of decision making. Therefore, the patient is sufficiently informed regarding their rights because there is enough information to make the proper decision relating to their rights (Health Literacy, 2012).
Some aspects of the concept from can be understood by an eighth grader, but other aspects cannot be understood. Such aspects which cannot be understood are details such as blood thinner before surgery and may be an 8th grader may not know what anesthesia means. Otherwise, most aspects of the consent form can be easily interpreted and understood.
Health care professionals can take various measures to ensure the patients understand the care options as well as make the right decisions while consenting. Such measures include health literacy whereby patients are told about their autonomy while increasing health advocacy. Culturally appropriate research in producing material which can be used to read and educate people. Medical education and patient communication during the training of healthcare practitioner. It is also important that there is more research on medical education and causal models which will be used educating the patients. Additionally, policies should be put in place which promotes health education. Doctors and health practitioners can also bring clarity in the healthcare system by offering proper education and explanations to patients they encounter (Health Literacy, 2012).
Keeping abreast with health care issues is important so as to stay informed of the new developments, technology, research and guidelines on patient care including legal and ethical guidelines. Patient autonomy is guided by policies. Autonomy allows education for patients but not make decisions for the patient. Professionals and nurses have the moral duty to understand their ethics, and patient autonomy is of the ethical standards of the profession (Ethical Issues in Nursing, 2012).
