This coursework is a group assignment and is set to test your ability in analytical and critical thinking in the subject of strategic management. You are required to choose a company and critically analyse it in terms of its business, industry, competitors, strategic issues and possible future actions. Choose a company that is well-known, either domestically or globally. Do not choose a company that is too small or unknown for it may be difficult to determine the authenticity of your report.

You are to do only secondary research by looking through information at the company’s website, newspapers, journals and other credible secondary sources.

Different groups are allowed to analyse the same company; however, each group must generate their own original work. Do not copy from each other.

The following is the suggested format for your report:

Chapter 1: Company Profile

This section covers the important information about the company such as its vision and mission, brief history, shareholders, businesses, subsidiaries, markets, and any other information you deem relevant to your report. The purpose of this section is to explain about the company. Assume your reader does not know anything about this company; therefore, a good way to approach this section is by asking this question: “If I didn’t know anything about this company, what are the things that I would want to know?”

Chapter 2: Internal and External Analyses

In this chapter, you are to do a SWOT analysis of the company, which is divided into two parts: internal analysis of the company to find out its strengths and weaknesses, and the external analysis of its environment, to find out its opportunities and threats.

For the internal analysis, you may analyse the company’s current strategies, resources, value chain, organisational culture & architecture.

For the external analysis, you may do macro-environmental analysis [political, economic, socio-cultural, technological or PEST] as well as industry & competitor analysis [Porter’s 5 Forces].

At the end of this chapter, you should summarise your findings into a SWOT table.
