Attendance and Participation (Weekly assessment). At each class session, you should actively participate in class discussion in ways that show a firm grasp of the reading material, critical evaluation of questions assigned along with the readings, and active listening and response to the comments of others. Each student is expected to carefully read and study the assigned readings prior to each class meeting, and to come to class with carefully considered perspectives and issues to discuss. Each student will also bring a minimum of 3 typed questions, comments, or criticisms of the day’s readings that they think will add to that day’s discussion. You will turn them in at the end of each class. They must be typed and printed. This is critical because the majority of each session will consist of focused discussion amongst us all on the day’s topics. The class is small, and every student is expected to contribute substantively to EACH class meeting. You will be responsible for reading the focal articles in depth.
Seminars/discussion:
During selected class sessions, you will be asked to lead the discussion. You can use the assignment questions to frame the discussion, but you should also be prepared to integrate the discussion as it unfolds and point it in useful directions. The discussion leader is responsible for (a) organizing the discussion around the focal articles, and (b) integrating the BlackBoard articles with the discussion in such a way that presents these articles to the class. The purposes of the discussions are (a) to provide a brief overview of the assigned topic and (b) to address its theoretical status, noting the quality of the available empirical evidence, and (c) to highlight an interesting new development on the topic. A summary or outline of the discussion must be typewritten, two to five pages in length, and distributed to the class on the day it is presented. Although I will leave it up to the seminar leader to determine the exact format for the discussion, at a minimum, the discussion should include:
1. Understanding of the key terms
2. Identifying and understanding of the key underlying theoretical mechanisms
3. Getting a basic grasp of the research findings in the area
4. Evaluating the quality of the work according to the criteria discussed in Sessions 1-3
5. Attempting (as we progress) to relate work in one OB area to work in other areas already discussed – i.e., to comment on similarities and differences in ideas, methods, findings
6. Future directions
a. General guidelines for discussant (seminar/discussion leader): 1. Create a handout that guides the discussion
