Write a report on one of the following topics. Begin by overviewing and explaining the approaches or theories that are relevant to the topic (position your report). Then describe how you will apply them to the given situation, and which aspects you will focus on (delimit your scope). Proceed by analysing the given situation (analysis and discussion). End by summarizing the main points that emerged from your analysis, focusing on what you learned about the given situation and how your theoretical framework helped you to understand the social uses of language, culture and/or communication.

Use formal academic style, avoiding contractions (eg ‘don’t’) and vague or colloquial words (eg ‘thing’). Refer to relevant articles and books we covered, and find five other credible and relevant references, besides the primary texts that you analyse. Use APA style to refer to them.

All topics include material that could be represented visually. Use at least two relevant visuals to present some information in your report. These could be screenshots, pictures, tables, charts, graphs, etc.

2. Using conflict theories and discourse analysis, analyse the discourses produced in a case that involves conflict. This could be an interaction or debate on a controversial subject, or an incident or situation where conflicting values produce an argument or misunderstanding. Consider the pragmatics of the situation, the assumptions, issues and/or ideologies involved, and the discourse strategies used to persuade the opposing party. The situation could come from a real context (eg parliamentary debate), or a fictional one (eg film or book). It should be a recent or contemporary text (because language changes over time). Transcribe the sections of the text that you analyse.
