Self-Analysis
1. Identify how you know each person in one sentence or less. What was their feedback about your results? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? Analyze the most important points in your answer; don’t provide the feedback for every result.
2. Provide at least two specific examples of how you plan to behave differently (do, say, or write) to improve as a leader in your profession
Answers:
1.
Self-evaluation is an essential part of the process of understanding one’s own strengths and weaknesses. But the process of self-evaluation must be infused with the process of obtaining and analyzing feedbacks of others. What others think about one’s strengths and weaknesses should be considered as valuable source of information that would be helpful in enhancing one’s own evaluation skills. Hence, to learn more about my own strengths and weaknesses I did resort to three individuals for their feedback on my professional, interpersonal, and several other skills. One of the individuals was an MBA student who had been my classmate, another individual was my supervisor at my present workplace, and the third individual was my close friend.
I had acquaintance with the MBA student as he was my classmate and my supervisor had been a person who had helped me immensely in improving my work performance, and moreover, my friend had always been beside me as my guide and philosopher. In respect of my social awareness skill, and particularly regarding the skill of being empathetic, my MBA classmate provided some crucial insights. He told me that I am an active listener who tries to understand others’ perspectives by putting myself in their shoes. Moreover, he told me that, as per his observation, I am always willing to listen to others’ perspectives when such perspectives are essentially different from my own. In respect of my organizational awareness the classmate informed that he thinks that though my understanding of the value of social networks is keen, I must develop my knowledge about the need of adapting to the informal team structure to get myself more at ease in exchanging ideas. Also, he told me that I am always eager to understand the values and culture of other classmates or project team members, but I must develop my informal communication skills even more.
Resorting to my supervisor what I did learn about myself was that, I have some specific strength that could be diminished if I do not address and mitigate my weaknesses. In the professional sphere, as indicated by my supervisor, I have proved myself to be a positive person who sees possibilities rather than problems. Moreover, being an optimist individual, as per my supervisor, I always see opportunities rather than threats in the workplace. But my supervisor told me that I must be more optimistic in terms of emerging as a visionary who has high hopes with the future. Moreover, he told me that I must believe in myself as the greatest change agent who can better my own future than my past. What he tried to mean was that; I must enhance my self-confidence in the long-run to face and overcome challenges in a more optimistic way. Furthermore, my supervisor told that embodying professionalism in my approach and attitude, at the workplace, I am always able to sustain my poise even in emotionally charged situations and this he thinks is possible due to the fact that I have good control on my impulses. Sustaining self-composure has been another of my skills as per him. Moreover, my supervisor also told me that I must hone my skill of keeping calmness at the face of stressful situations.
My friend, on the other hand, provided valuable information about my relationship management skills. He told me that I am good at making and keeping relationships. He also told me that I have the ability to build pride in the group to which I belong. My friend told me that he always sees a leader in me due to the fact that I have the capacity to lead others and bring out the best in my followers. But he also told me that my leadership skills would increase if I start honing my visionary skills. My friend told me that I must develop the skill of articulating a compelling vision for others like a good leader. Furthermore, from the social perspective my friend told that he thinks that I am a good conflict resolver because I have the skill of finding a solution that often brings a win-win situation for the conflicting parties. But he also suggested that I must hone my skill of bringing conflict into the open rather than trying to mitigate it in disguise.
2.
The aforesaid feedbacks helped me immensely in evaluating myself and my skills. What I have learned is that there are certain strengths in me which I must employ in accomplishing success both in my professional and social life. But I have also understood that for emerging as a good leader I must develop and hone some specific skills. Primarily, I must develop the skill of envisioning a positive future and of articulating a compelling vision for other. Such skill would help me in building trust in my followers in the long run at the face of adversities. What I have understood by interpreting my test results and the feedbacks received is that; in the long run, without only concentrating on my self-improvement, I must invest time and energy in helping others to improve in their professional and social life. This characteristic would help me in building bonds with people and this bond will eventually pave the way for me to emerge as a good organizational leader. Besides, I have understood that for emerging as a good leader I must learn the skill and art of leading by inspiring others in a way that infuses an emotional tone in the course of individual and organizational success. Also, I have decided that to gradually transform myself into a good organizational leader I must hone my skill of collaborating with others in both formal and informal ways. Informality is also a key to success and I must learn and develop this skill in such a way that the same can be blended into my formal communication skill in such a manner that would make me more adaptive to others’ thoughts, emotions, likes and dislikes. And it is by honing all such skills that I would be able to provide myself with the opportunity of becoming a good leader in the long-run.
