Key Document – London Tourism Report 2014-2015 (London & Partners) Reading the London and Partners report “London Tourism Report 2014-2015” available from My Learning, students are asked to complete 3 short activities comprising: Activity 1 – comprehension of the tourism data, relating to London Activity 2 – Sourcing comparable tourism data for another area Activity 3 – reflecting on new tourism and methodology knowledge Please ensure that you plan your assignment work carefully in advance so that you set aside sufficient time to complete the preparatory work needed for activities 2 and 3 i.e. finding comparative data sources and reflecting on what the data and exercise findings mean in terms of your own understanding of tourism. Complete your report, organised as three sections corresponding to each of the activities below. Activity 1 – (10 questions) Looking at Table 1.2 1. Indicate how many overnight visits were there to London in total in 2014? 2. How many nights did the overseas visitors spent in the capital in 2011? 3. What was the expenditure by the domestic tourists in 2013? and what percentage does this represent of the total in 2013? Looking at table 2.9 4. What is the biggest segment of tourists that visited London in 2014? Looking at table 2.10 5. Which segment of tourists spent most per visit? Looking at table 3.3 6. Which region (domestic visit market) accounted for most visits in 2014? 7. Which region (domestic visit market) accounted for biggest expenditure in 2014? Looking at table 4.9 8. Which country spent most per visit of London? Looking at table 5.4 9. In which borough in London can the most hotels be found? Looking at table 6.1 10. What was the most visited leading London attractions in 2013/2014 and with how many visits? Activity 2 – Comparative Data Gather comparable tourism data for 2 areas of your choice (to be comparable, the 2 areas need to be the same spatial area). Provide a summary of the tourism data for the 2 areas, which details 1. Expenditure 2. Employment 3. GDP/GVA Areas may be designated at city, region, or country level. Do not attempt to mix these spatial levels e.g. by comparing London to Australia as this will not work. Also ensure that you use a consistent currency to ensure that comparisons can be made. Provide details of the external sources used for area 1 and area 2. Provide a short summary that compares and contrasts the tourism credentials of the two areas. Activity 3 – Reflection Prepare a short statement that reflects on 1. What you have learned about the two areas? 2. What you have learned about researching tourism from doing this assignment? The following table provides an overview of the assessment requirements. Overview of Assessment 1 Description of Coursework Examine the data. Source and analyse data for 2 areas. Reflect on what the data shows and what you have learned. Word count Between 2-6 pages Learning outcomes This is an exercise in using data to explore tourism.
