What do you think about their analyses?
In their study, the authors have analysed the influence of fundraising capabilities of schools on the outcome of students (Guo & Johnson, 2017). It is a valid study, given that there is a stark difference in the fundraising capabilities of schools with students at a higher academic grade, than schools without them. There is generally perceived to be a connection between the fundraising capacities, and the performance inequalities of the schools. Going by the study by Camburn et al (2016), there needs to be more experiments that are conducted on school settings, thus widening the educational experience. This study holds a great significance, as the authors have thrown insight into the underfunding of schools, thus creating the need for raising funds from external sources.
What are strengths or weaknesses of the paper?
The paper compares the funds raised in schools with similar backgrounds, and analyses the association between the funds raised by the schools and the performance of its students. The major strengths of this paper is that they have performed this study in a good number of schools, thereby eliminating bias. Also, with clarity in analysis, the authors were able to come up with the result that there was not any significant relationship between the fundraising capacities of schools, and the students’ academic performance. However, one weakness that was felt is that the authors have used the “pass rate” as the outcome measure, which might show only the academic performance of the student.
To what extent are the data appropriate for responding to the stated purpose of the study?
The data used in this study covered all elementary schools in Toronto State Education Board (TDSB). Out of the total number of schools, sub-analyses were made on schools that had classes up to Grade 3, and those who had classes beginning with Grade 6. The outcome measure was the “pass rate” of the students’, which was linked to the total external funds raised by the schools. Given the data, statistical analyses were computed, and the results were obtained. Thus, we can confirm that the data used in this study was appropriate in order to achieve its stated purpose.
Do you agree/disagree with how the authors interpreted their results?
The results of this study reveal; that there was no statistically significant relationship between the student’s outcomes and the fundraising capabilities of that school. It also stated that the unfair advantages to the students if any which was obtained by fundraising would be limited to parental interactions, increased commitments, and non-academic impacts rather that affecting the students’ outcomes. This result, though supported by a few, is opposed by a few other researchers (Pistiolis, 2012), (Miller, Bennett, Carter, Hylton-Fraser, Castle, & Potter, 2015). However, though not statistically prevalent, there does exist an inequality between the schools with external funds and those without, thus I disagree with the results.
Are there any limitations that should have been mentioned?
This study deals only with the schools that come under the TDSB. Even though the numbers are high, a varied study could have been performed, considering schools in other districts as well. Other limitations include that only the academic performance was taken into consideration, though not mentioned in the report. However, no limitations or challenges that were faced by the authors are reported in the paper. Suggestions for future research are also not mentioned.
