Question:
Discussion and give my idea about the movie “keep your eye open” you have to watch tv and tell if you are agree or disagree and why?
The documentary “Keep your Eyes Open” depicts some so-called ‘adrenaline junkies’, that is, those who use their leisure time pursuing extreme sensations. A couple of things came to mind while watching the movie: the first refers to the concept of flow and how level of skill and commitment is fundamental to achieving such a state, particularly when sensations involved are so extreme. The second refers to the concept of serious leisure, and how leisure can become more than just a past time and being feelings of identity, belonging and even become a profession (for the lucky ones! :-)). So what I’d like the group to discuss is how the concept of flow OR of serious leisure is depicted in this documentary (provide examples), compare with what we have learned about these concepts, and discuss how they can have a positive or negative impact on someone’s health and wellbeing (make sure to use examples from the movie and academic sources to support your argument).
Answer:
The movie “Keep Your Eyes Open” is one of the rarest gems found in Hollywood that captures the essence of the moments as each of the pro-athlete characters of the movie during their leisure, seek out in quest of the ultimate adrenaline rush. As soon as the movie starts, the audience feels amazed to find the skier, racer, BMX rider as well as the snowboarder indulging in serious leisure, trying to make use of the available time, by pursuing the amateur and hobbyist activities through which they derive a feeling of fulfillment. The movie takes the audience on a scary and yet highly adventurous journey, where the characters perform some of the jaw-dropping stunts and gruesome spills, jumping over the edges of the snowy mountains, riding most recklessly, living in the moment, regardless of the consequence later. Unlike the casual leisure activities where the people usually engage in peaceful actions, that soothes them and engage their souls, the characters here indulge themselves in the most adventurous activities that challenge their strength, courage and guts (Elkington & Stebbins, 2014). This helps in rendering them a strong sense of identity, as the characters engage in risky activities that make them encounter a variety of odds and impediments including fatal injuries. Hence overcoming the same becomes an act of bravado, resistance and strength that not only makes the characters feel more alive, but also helps them realize the mission of their lives- fight till the strength prevails. While speaking of the health impacts of the serious leisure activities, it should be noted that adrenaline rush can make one happy, releasing the stress and reduce anxiety (Barbieri & Sotomayor, 2013). However, the way the characters in the movie engage in risky actions, the extremity of the reckless actions can take a toll on their lives, or even cause health issues such as nausea, fainting, dizziness or brain injury.
