Introduction:
The human beings since the traditional times judge the abilities as well as the talent of the individuals on the basis of the level of success which they have attained and also the amount of money that they have amassed during the course of their life. It is significant to note that various kinds of studies as well as literary works have composed over the years which have tried to analyze the reasons or the factors which makes a particular individual succeed and vice versa. Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers: The Story of Success” (2008) is one such work which tries to explore this particular question and tries to come up with the relevant set of answers. He comes up with the conclusion that “Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty-two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds” (Gladwell, 2008). In this particular literary work he analyses the life stories of successful people from various walks of life and comes to the conclusion that more important than talent all the successful people of the world have got the right kind of opportunities as well as cultural and social upbringing which were essential to not only shape but also mould their thought process. This paper will provide an analysis of the book “Outliers: The Story of Success” stating the viewpoints of the author, purpose, main points, conclusion, convergence or divergence, relevance, utilization and others.
Author’s Viewpoint
The major viewpoint of the author during the course of the entire work seems to be the fact that “The values of the world we inhabit and the people we surround ourselves with have a profound effect on who we are” (Gladwell, 2008). The author uses the term outliers to refer to the successful people of the world like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, the successful pilots, hockey players and others. However, instead of using the traditional meaning of the term ‘outliers’ he uses the term in the sense that these people are not only way ahead of the other individuals in the field in which they have specialized but at the same time have formed the very definition of success in that particular field (Cowley, 2018). The author furthermore is of the opinion that more important than talent the social upbringing of these individuals as well as the kind of opportunities which they have got is more significant and have directly lead to the high level of success which they have been able to attain the field of operation (Gladwell, 2008). For example, he gives the example of Bill Gates and states that the only reason Gates was able to develop the high level of knowledge about computers which made him successful was due to the fact that from an early age he had the facility to use the computer systems (Cowley, 2018). Furthermore, he is also of the opinion that the only reason the hockey players were being able to attain success was because they followed “the 10,000hr rule” (Gladwell, 2008). Thus, it would be apt to say that the primary viewpoint of the author in this particular book is the fact that “talent is nothing without opportunities” (Gladwell, 2008).
Author’s Purpose
The author in this particular work has literally converted the lives of the successful people of the past as well as of the present times into a book which he tries to analyze in the best possible so that he could deconstruct the theories or the principles which have directly lead to the success that they have been able to achieve. The author in this particular work tries to refute the viewpoint that hard work and an immense amount of talent are the prerequisites of success. He is of the viewpoint that it is true that hard work and talent matter a lot and they certainly give a particular individual a definite amount of extra edge over the other individuals belonging to the same genre but the roles which adequate opportunities and upbringing players in the same process can never be underestimated. Thus, he states that all the successful people of the world were born in a particular era or a generation and the congenial factors or climate of that particular era contributed in a significant towards the success attained by them. Thus, it would be fair to say that the primary purpose of the author in the literary work under discussion here can be said to be the fact that he tries to decode the myth of the successful people and in doing so he comes to the conclusion that apart from talent, opportunities, upbringing, the time period to which the particular individual belongs and others also plays a significant role in the process of attaining success.
Author’s Main Point
The primary point which the author of the work “Outliers: The Story of Success” wants to drive home to the readers is the fact that the success which the successful people of the world have been able to attain can be seen as a conglomeration of various factors that have directly helped them to attain success. The author is of the viewpoint that some of the most important factors which play a crucial role in the attainment of success by a particular individual are the talent of that particular individual, the willingness to work hard, the kind of upbringing which that particular individual has received, the time period in which that particular individual was born and others (Cowley, 2018). Many people are of the viewpoint that talent is the most important factor which contributes to the success attained by a particular individual (Bolman & Deal, 2017). However, the author of the book under discussion here seems to be of the opinion that talent is nothing without opportunity. Thus, he says that “Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities” (Gladwell, 2008).
Author’s Conclusion
The author comes to the conclusion that it is true that the concepts of hard work as well as talent play a significant role in the process of the attainment of success but there are other factors like upbringing, opportunities, the time period in which that particular individual was born and others also contribute in a significant manner. Thus, he states that “People don’t rise from nothing….It is only by asking where they are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn’t” (Gladwell, 2008). In addition to these, he states all the successful people of the world have various things in common like hard work, utilization of adequate opportunities and others. Thus, it would be apt to say that the author has not only tried to explore the manner in which successful people attain success but at the time has tried to create a manual which the other people take the help of.
Convergence and Divergence
The transformational theory of leadership has emerged as one of the most important ones of the present times and it is generally seen that the majority of the successful people take the help of this particular style of leadership (Antonakis & Day, 2017). The successful people of the world thus try to not only motivate the followers who are associated with them in the best possible manner but at the same time try to lead them by example. The transactional style of leadership is another important one and it is also being used by the various successful people. Thus, it is generally seen that the successful people of the world try to take the help of the concept of reward and punishment which forms one of the most important precepts of this particular style of leadership to effectively enhance the performance level of the followers who are associated with them (Northouse, 2018). The servant leadership theory, on the other hand, states that the nature of relationship between a leader and the followers who are associated with them should be just like the relationship a master shares with his or her servants (Schyns & Riggio, 2016). It needs to be mentioned at this particular juncture that this particular style of leadership has become obsolete in the present and it is rarely seen that any successful person takes the help of this particular style of leadership. Thus, it can be said that this particular theory of leadership is a point of divergence for the book under discussion here.
Relevance
The majority of the viewpoints of the author are totally relevant in the context of the present world. The author dwells on the role which the opportunities, upbringing, the time period in which they are born and others plays a significant role in the attainment of success by the successful people and they are relevant even in the context of the present day world. However, at this particular juncture it needs to be said that the hard work and others are not the sole guarantees of success. For example, it is generally seen that there are various individuals who are more talented as well as put in more amount of hard work than the people who are really successful yet they are unable to attain success. Thus, it would be apt to say that the book under discussion provides relevant theoretical perspectives without taking into consideration the practical considerations.
Utilization
The information as well as the viewpoints which the author provides in the book under discussion here can be utilized in the day to day life by the various individuals. The book can be seen as a manual which the people who want to attain success can utilize in an effective manner to gain success. Furthermore, the various organizations can also take the help of the viewpoints which the author propounds in this particular book to achieve success in a much better manner. Moreover, the business organizations also can take the help of the concepts which the author propounds in this particular work to further the chances of their gaining success. It is true that some of the concepts which the author propounds are completely theoretical and not applicable in the real life instances yet most of the opinions of the author in the book are completely relevant ones and if utilized in an effective can further the chances of an individual to gain success.
Conclusion:
To conclude, success is something which each and every individual tries to achieve during the course of his or her life. However, not everyone is able to achieve success in terms of monetary growth, fame and other parameters. The book “Outliers: The Story of Success” tries to find out the reasons which all the successful people of the world have in common and the author indeed comes to the conclusion that there are certain essential factors like opportunities, talent, upbringing and other factors that all the successful people of the world have in common. Thus, it would be apt to say that success is a conglomeration of various factors and is not necessarily related to talent.
