Overview
The NG9-1-1 system is also known as the next generation system which is considered to be a development and research project which is supposed to be funded by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). This will be aimed for defining the framework and to deploy emergency communications based on the use of Internet Protocol (IP) (Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) System Initiative Final System Design Document, 2018). The main objectives of this project is to enable the use of emergency contacts by dialing 9-1-1 from their wired or wireless phones or by even utilizing the IP-based communications.
System analysis
The main use of the configurations in this project utilizes off-the-shelf systems. This is a major benefit for the project (Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) System Initiative Final System Design Document, 2018). However, this concept can also share some disadvantages as well. In addition, the system also used the SIP concept (Session Initiated Protocol) to be used as a signaling protocol for call routing, establishment and termination.
For addressing the need to test call origination, various systems and equipments were tested. These included PSTN telephones, cellular phones, call centers and even laptop calling features.
Modifications
I think that in place of the SIP protocol, the project could have used the PRI framework (Primary rate interface). Both of the SIP and the PRI uses the VoIP protocol for connecting and connection to a PSTN is needed. However, in terms of the quality of the call achieved, the PRI is a more effective solution which can be utilized effectively in case of emergencies.
Another modification that I could have adopted is in the design approach used. I have studied many project management frameworks (“An introduction to the Unified Modeling Language”, 2018). For this reason, I think that I could have used five-system architecture in place of the four-system architecture that has been used. The extra layer would be after the preliminary system design to include the evaluative model for evaluating the designs.
Moreover, if I were to do the project I would have considered making UML diagrams as possible. This will be utilized in knowing the requirements of the system. In addition, this will also be utilized in denoting the activities that will be performed by the users associated with it (“Examples of UML use case diagrams – online shopping, retail website, bank ATM, e-Library, airport check-in, restaurant, hospital.”, 2018). For example, firstly, the users will call the system. Secondly, the administrator will oversee the processes. Lastly, the service provider will be responsible for connecting the calls.
Lastly, the use of custom-off-the-shelf subsystems would have been avoided by me. This is mainly because the use of the commercially made application cannot be effectively utilized. The vendor who is responsible for developing the solution will not provide full access to the system (Kruger, Abu-Mahfouz & Hancke, 2015). As such, this will raise various concerns of security issues in the company responsible for the project. This is the reason that I believe the use of self-developed applications will be a great application. This will be responsible for enhancing the security of the application. As such, the problems related to less effectiveness will also be addressed.
