Discuss about the Interventions To Improve Cultural Competency In Health Care.
Answer:
From the learning topic materials I have learnt that in order to effectively dispense quality medical service to the Australian indigenous people, it is important to be culturally competent so as to connect with the patients before devising interventions. As, I have chosen health care as my profession which is considered to be the most noble profession that makes me responsible enough to justify my job-role. As a primary health-care professional, my job is to cater to the medical needs of the people irrespective of their creed, cast, tribe or breed. I should adopt an impartial approach while delivering service delivery to the patients of both indigenous as well as non-indigenous origin. The implications for the indigenous nursing practice would involve understand the traditional and customary belief of the patients and treating them with adequate respect and honor. A respectful approach would enhance better communication that would ultimately help in attaining patient satisfaction with the intervention. In order to provide better health facilities and medical assistance to the aboriginal community it is important to realize the existence of a major gap between the indigenous and the non indigenous population base of Australia (Herring et al. 2013). It is extremely important to adopt measures to bridge the existing gap that could only be made possible with education and awareness in terms of cultural competence among the care givers and associated health professionals. The Australian government has launched the CTM project other associated wellness projects so as to improve the quality of aboriginal health. However, the effective outcome of the wellness projects is yet to be seen. The stigmatized approach of the health care professionals have been held responsible to a major extent for slowing down the process of indigenous welfare (Thackrah and Thompson 2013). According to my perspective, I could strictly work in accordance to my action plan that would be based on my personal targets. Some of the actions would include, greeting my indigenous clients with a smile and maintaining eye contact to the maximum level (Clifford et al. 2015). I feel talking to them for a while and making them feel comfortable by briefing a little about myself can help in building a better communication and an understanding bond. Prior to designing an intervention or writing down an action plan, I would ensure that I ask the patients to state their health complications and find out about their treatment history or drugs that they are allergic to. In this way, I think I would be able to effectively introduce a change in my present strategy of tackling with indigenous patients. Adopting this minute change would help in understanding the cultural sentiment of the patients and at the same time would also ease the flow of communication. Further, the politeness could help in gaining the trust of the patients and accordingly increase the indigenous patient inflow. Similarly, my colleagues would also be able to absorb the positivity from me and improvise on their present style of nursing practice. Lastly, it can be stated that the change in the attitude of the professionals with tolerance and inclusion of cultural competence can make a difference and help in achieving all the goals of the CTM project in less than a decade (Snijder et al. 2015).
