Assignment Task 2: Individual Case Study Purpose: A case study assignment in which you can demonstrate your ability to use the concepts and language introduced during the first five topics. This exercise is based on the importance of gaining credibility within an organization by using the language of managerial leadership to apply key concepts to case study examples. Due Date: Sunday 11:59 of Week 5 (April 8, 2018) Marks Allocated: 30% Word Limit: 2000 (+/-10%) Task & Scope: The five questions are designed to test your comprehension of the course materials in relation to real world cases, and your capacity to see how different course topics overlap with each other and provide you with tools for understanding organizational and leadership problems and solutions. Essential preparation for this task, requires you to carefully read: Brenneman, G. 1998, ‘Right Away and All at Once: How We Saved Continental’, Harvard Business Review, 76(5), pp162-173. Here are the five questions: 1. In what ways did Greg Brenneman cultivate what Goleman (2013) describes as the triad of awareness? In what ways could Brenneman improve his focused leadership? 2. Which of Smith et al.’s (2016) paradoxes did Brenneman face and how did Brenneman transcend either/or thinking? 3. What assumptions does Brenneman make about Continental’s business environment, mission and core competencies? Was the theory of business valid according to Drucker’s (1994) specifications? Is there any evidence that the Continental business model is transformational according to Kavadias et al.’s (2016) conceptualisation? 4. In what ways did Brenneman practice exemplary leadership as described by Kouzes et al. (2011)? 5. In what ways is Brenneman’s personal sense of purpose as defined by Craig & Snook (2014) evident in the ‘Go Forward Plan’?
