Effective performance appraisal systems aid in the development of a focused and motivated staff. This study considered administrative staffs in Joseph Ayo Babalola University and how their performance has a ripple effect on the overall institutional management performance. The objective of performance appraisal in private universities was examined, and significant variables for attaining an effective performance appraisal were identified. Performance assessment systems in private institutions are multi-rating systems that are only effective if the members of staff involved in the rating/appraising process are educated. Furthermore, because the performance evaluation systems used at private universities are ineffective and just exist as a matter of formality. Achieving the objective of measuring performance of members of staff becomes difficult. Genuine performance appraisal involvement can minimize many of the flaws of standard performance appraisal methods while also fostering a more “humane” and ethical decision-making process in human resource management. Research Rationale
Previous studies have sought to either examine the benefit of good performance appraisal system on the organizational productivity or mainly on the importance of having a working performance appraisal system in place. Some research works mainly examined the participation of staff in performance appraisal process while little effort has been deployed into examining the impact of an effective performance appraisal on the staff been appraised. It is important to note that a working and effective performance appraisal system helps in motivating, improves job satisfaction and even helps in discovering hidden talents and untapped potentials.
