Hurricane Andrew, a tropical cyclone that demolished the Bahamas, Sothern Florida and South-central Louisiana was the most catastrophic hurricane in the history of United States that had hit the state in late August 1992 (Brown, 2014). When the hurricane hit the states twenty-six years ago, it had not just inflicted a physical damage but a psychological damage as well. The article “Hurricane Andrew’s Other Legacy” provides an insight through the eyes of a witness and recommends informative measures towards psychological encounters with natural calamities. The psychologists from the Crisis Response Task Force have identified two specific phases of the trauma caused by Hurricane Andrew. The Phase One also known as the Impact Phase is the intense crisis feedback that embodies reaction of shock, anger and frustration. The victims suffered psychosomatic breakdown such as hesitancy towards finding a shelter. The effects can last for several weeks or even months depending upon the impact. The Phase Two or the Recoil Phase is the phase when the victims start facing the degree of their loss and search ways that can help them to continue with their life. The after effects of this phase can last approximately up to 18 months or more (McEntire, 2014).
The team has developed certain guidelines for the psychologists that addresses towards the psychological needs of the victims who have witnessed the catastrophe. The recommendations comprise of effective relief efforts and self-help efforts to assist the victims with the basic necessities and mental-health programs to gain self-reliance after enduring the wrath of natural calamities such as Hurricane Andrew. The recommendations mentioned in the article seem to be favorable and applicable as these propositions can help an individual to get mentally prepared before the occurrence of a natural calamity. These recommendations are indeed convincing for a victim to resist the mental trauma and stress who has witnessed an apocalypse. The efficacy of this article lies in the fact that the recommendations mentioned in the article are truly suggestive in combating natural disasters  psychologically.
