Today, evidence-based medicine is the standard in the majority of clinical organizations, although so-called “alternative medicine” is still practiced. Today, the use of middle-range nursing theories informs nursing practice by serving four primary functions: (1) descriptive – by identifying properties and components of a phenomenon(e.g.:the middle-range Symptoms Management Theory (SMT) describes the symptom experience, symptom management strategies and expected outcomes of an illness), (2) explanatory – by explaining the relationships between properties and components of a phenomenon (SMT explains causal symptoms etiology, treatments approaches and expected effects of treatments in relation to the symptoms experience), (3) predictive – by providing an assessment of a likelihood of a clinical phenomenon or condition (SMT uses clearly defined and objectively measured indicators of treatment progress/results), and (4) prescriptive – by addressing therapeutics and consequences of nursing interventions (SMT involves the individual aspects of symptom management, i.e.what, where, why, how much, to whom, and how, which guide the nursing practitioner in selecting appropriate intervention/care strategies).
