Explain the impact of significant life events on individuals
Analyse possible group responses to significant life events that occur to one of its members
Analyse the impact for others in health and social care when an individual experiences significant life events

Answer:

Introduction
There are a number of factors present in the society and personal life which affect the lives of the individuals. One of these factors is the significant life events in the individual lives that affect both the individual living it and the people close to him or her. This essay focuses on such impacts of the significant life events of an individual on both the individual and the people around that individual. The essay focuses on the case study provided for the corresponding analysis (Baumeister, 2013).
Impact of Significant Life events on individuals
Significant life events can be considered to be sudden changes in an individual’s life, which may involve the loved ones passing away or some trauma the individual suffers. Such a sudden change or trauma causes the individual to be emotionally shaken up, which in turn causes the individual to take some time to be recovered from. The significant life event can be either negative or positive for the individuals, both of which have a significant impact on the life of the individuals. Some of the positively significant life events allow the individuals to evolve as human beings and achieve a higher level of maturity and experience. Whereas the negative life events impact the individual in a negative manner (Baumeister, 2013). When Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer, she took the decision of not receiving any medical treatment for her ailment. This was a significant life event for Rite, which allowed her to assess her current conditions along with the possible options in her hand. These significant life events are generally categorized and classified by the amount of stress the individual has to endure in order to make it through them. The revelation of the breast cancer was a highly significant life event for Rita and her friends in the sheltered housing project. Sue, who had been a friend of Rita’s for 40 years also was impacted severely due to this significant event in Rita’s life. Rita passing away in her sleep was also a significant event in the lives of Sue and the other people in the sheltered housing project. So the loss of their friend Rita can have a significantly negative impact on the lives of all the people staying in the sheltered housing project. The trauma of losing their friend can deteriorate their health as well, which could lead to severe impacts on their personal lives (Lin, 2013).
Analysis of Group Responses to Significant Life Events
When the individual going through a significant event in his or her life is a part of a group, then the event affects everyone in the group. As discussed earlier, the significant events in the life of an individual can be positive or negative. In both the cases, all the people in the group are affected and involved. In this case, the diagnosis of Rita of breast cancer also affected all the residents of the sheltered housing project including her close friend of 40 years, Sue. During such a difficult time in an individual’s life, all the members of the group tend to make the time of the individual a bit better through continuous support. The members of the group respond with fear and concern to the diagnosis of one of their fellow members having breast cancer (Brown, 2016). When Rita passed away in her sleep, the event is a lot significant in the lives of all of the members living in the sheltered housing project. The group responds to this event with a lot of grief and sadness due to the loss of their dear friend. All the members of the group are affected differently based on their relation with Rita. Sue was her friend for 40 years, which allowed them to have a close relationship. Sue was affected the most due to the death of Rita. Such an event causes severe trauma to Sue both mentally and emotionally, which in turn deteriorates her health as well. So a negative life event affects the entire group both mentally and emotionally, which in turn requires some time for the people to be recovered from (Nelson, 2014).
Impact on Others in Health and Social Care
The inhabitants of the sheltered housing project included Rita and Sue, two old friends along with 8 other people. All of these people had a good relationship in the house and shared the happiness and sorrow equally. Rita passed away in her sleep, three months after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Such a significant life event in the group had a significant impact on all the members of the group both mentally and physically. All the group members supported Rita through her tough time during her illness, which in turn results in a trauma due to her death, including Sue, her old friend. The sorrow of losing a close friend along with the fear for own life affects all the members of the group to a significant extent. This, in turn, affects the health of all the members of the group (Folkman, 2013). The carers present in the sheltered housing project were also close to Rita as they have been working on the project for close to 8 years. So the trauma affects them as well. The health and social care of the group are undoubtedly affected by Rita passing away due to breast cancer. But continuous support and understanding by both the group and the healthcare professional allow everyone to be free from the trauma eventually. This, in turn, allows the others to receive proper health and social care. The understanding of the healthcare practitioners and professionals of the situation is a significant factor in maintaining the level of the health and social care of the others in the group and society (Slavich, 2014).
Conclusion
The case study was analyzed to gain an effective overview of the impacts of the significant life events. The analysis covered the impacts on the individuals, members of a group and the healthcare of others, due to the significant events in an individual’s life.
