Question:
Write a paper that analyzes the story of Ivan Illych in terms of concepts of the “healing environment” found in chapter 7-9 of Called to Care: A Christian Worldview for Nursing. Be sure to address the phenomenology of illness and disease (i.e. the personal “what it is like” of illness and disease) in the paper.
In conclusion, provide a personal analysis of your own experience with illness and disease and how several factors colored that exper
Answer:
As seen, Ivan Ilych’s was sick for a period of 3 months. The people around him were aware about this and he would soon vacate his place of work because of his illness. He slept less and after being subjected to medication, nothing happen and his illness was getting worse. He did not take food prepared for him simply because it was distasteful and disgusting. After a while, he obtained some comfort that was brought about by his peasant by the name Garasim. He was a clean peasant lad who grew in town and was always a very cheerful man. When Gerasim went to visit Ivan, his heavy boots emitting a pleasant smell of tar and fresh winter air, came in wearing a clean Hessian apron, (Ivan, 2012).
They had conversation with Ivan Ilych and it is through this that he felt better. He tried to perform some exercises on his ailing body. We are told that once he held his legs gently he felt much better. This continued for a while and every time Ivan would call Gerasim just to hold his legs, and this improved his health. (Gary, 2012). Gerasim seemed to be very close to him and holding his legs all night long was what he would do to keep Ivan feel better.
One morning Gerasim was gone and peter the footman came over. Peter offered Ivan tea but he went ahead to reject it. He asked him to move to the sofa but did not accept, rather told him to leave him alone. The only thing he ordered from peter was a cup of tea where he went ahead to fetch him then left the place, (Tolstoy, Leo, 2011). When he brought him tea, Ivan asked peter to help him change his shirt and it was during that moment peter realized that he was in great pain. Later on, the doctor came in to check on the welfare of Ivan. He is still in bad state and nothing had changed since his admission in the hospital. Ivan thought that the doctor kept lying about his condition and got amused by this fact. The doctor did some few tests to Ivan, which included, feeling his pulse and taking the temperature. All this Ivan thought is just nonsense since he was not improving. After a while, his wife came in to check him and she first gave an apology for taking long to see him when he was suffering, (Madar, Chase, 2010)
After the tests, the doctor decided to call a specialist. The doctor diagnosed him with kidney and appendix problem. Ivan was very hopeless and only thought about his death but the doctor gave him hope. His daughter came in later accompanied by her fiancée who is a magistrate. He reminded him to follow the doctor’s instructions to avoid sufferings and pain. Everyone was seen to give advices to Ivan and much more being concerned about his health. When they left, he felt the situation was getting better though the pain was getting worse, (Merriman, 2013). The wife returned late in the night and met Gerasim with Ivan but he told them to keep off from where he was. He seemed not to like their company due to the depression he was going through. He complained to God about his sufferings and wept all through, (Tolstoy, Leo, 2011). He wished to die because he felt that suffering was too much. He recalled his childhood memories and became hopeful since it was full of joy, (Freeman, Mark, 2010).
In conclusion, I wish to say that illness is a suffering that keeps one from leading a normal life. It gives someone bad experience, which can make one feel very, depressed. One loses social life with other people and even wishes to die. Someone would just wish to have his/her time alone because one think is a causing suffering to people around him/her when they have to keep on checking his/her welfare. This makes someone feels like he/she is a burden to other people. It feels bad when one realizes that people had to forsake their duties just to come over to check on you. The money used while undergoing such treatment is a lot and not unless the family has enough money, one would start seeking help from other people, (Vladimirovich, 2012). This can make one depressed because you start asking for money from other people to pay hospital bills. This makes one to be avoided by people around you. When someone is sick, one need that company to avoid depression that leads to much suffering. (Merriman, 2013).
