This pathway allows you to explore approaches to health informatics research using an issue proposals relevant to your professional environment. You will apply the knowledge gained in CRH606 to develop proposals to explore this issue from different perspectives. Assessment Task: Preliminary stages of research Identify a health informatics research topic or problem from your professional environment. Explain the processes for developing a research proposal for the issue Provide a brief literature review using approximately six scholarly articles and relevant policies. On the basis of the literature review, develop two research questions. One should be positivist and one interpretivist. My topic needs to be RiskMan (our Incident reporting system) as we right now are working on a project to engage more Doctors to report incidents and they have listed some issues in regards to why it is believe they do not use it appropriately, it is about technical skills as well as time and that they think is not their responsibility. Sounds like a really good potential piece of research. For this first assignment it is really more about the three questions under the task – so explain what you will need to do to develop the research proposal – what elements are important to the specific problem? What is generic to all research proposals? You don’t have to have the answers to all these things but consider the purpose of the research proposal and the different elements of it – introduction, Lit review, Question/Hypothesis/aim, Ethics, Methodology (just what it might be), Data analysis (again what you might use), Timeline, Conclusion, References. Talk about why each of these is important and what needs to be considered in your particular research. Then do a brief literature review about the topic – look at around 6 papers that address your topic and use them to build the case for this to be a worthwhile thing to research. There have been some recent publications about issues with reporting via online systems and the doctor component is really interesting. You may not find much in the area about doctors attitudes etc. to reporting incidents but this can be a good reason for it to be researched. Once you have done the literature review you should be able to see a couple of ways in which the research could be done and so create two different research questions – one should be positivist and one interpretivist.
