Question
Research Article SummaryAs you embark on your career as a student, it is very likely that you will be asked to prepare papers or essays that require you to do “research” or to conduct a “literature review” on a particular topic. You may find information from many sources such as books, textbooks, government documents, the Internet, and periodicals such as magazines and academic journals. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with research articles that are published in academic journals.
Academic journals are periodicals that are published on a regular basis and therefore contain the latest findings in specific fields. Academic journals generally contain two types of articles. These include literature reviews and reports of specific research conducted by the authors of the article. Literature reviews provide an overview of the findings of research on a specific topic. The article on children and divorce that is assigned as a required reading in Unit 4 of the course material is an example of a literature review from an academic journal. Such literature reviews are secondary information sources because they report on the work of other people. Research articles published in academic journals are primary information sources that report on the original work of the authors. Authors will provide a description of the research questions that were being asked in the study (sometimes in the form of specific hypotheses), the sample and method used to gather data, the method of data analysis, and the findings and conclusions of the study.
For this assignment you are required to prepare a summary of a research article that has been published in an academic journal. You are free to choose research on any topic that is related to the family. Journal of Marriage and Families, Family Relations, and Journal of Family Issues are journals that are commonly used to report on research in the field of family studies. These journals are available through the University of Manitoba Libraries. However, you do not need to limit your search to these journals. Many other appropriate journals may be found by searching through the University of Manitoba Libraries and many of these are available on-line. The limitation on your choice of articles is that it must have been published within the last five years. Make sure there is a methods section that describes how the authors conducted their research.
There are a few ways to search for journal articles. If you are not particular about the topic of the article that you summarize, you can simply browse through journals to pick an article. You can access journals on-line by going to the University of Manitoba Libraries homepage. Under “Find” you will see “E-Journals”. Once you enter your Library ID and Pin, you can search by journal title. For example, you could type the title Journal of Marriage and Families and then explore the journal and select an article.
If you would like to summarize an article on a particular topic, you can search through the on-line databases available through the University of Manitoba Libraries. I like to search for articles through EBSCOhost, because so many peer reviewed articles from academic journals are available through this database. You do not need to use this database, but it will help you get started if you are uncertain about the process. From the Libraries homepage, under “Find” click “Databases A-Z”. Next, look under “E” for EBSCOhost Full Text. After you enter your ID and PIN number you will need to choose a database from within EBSCOhost. I always use “Academic Search Complete”, because it contains academic sources. Once you continue, you will be on the search page where you can search by topic. You can limit your search to peer reviewed journals from periodicals and you can also limit your search by date of publication. Finding an article will take some time. It is best not to leave this for too long.
Answer
Families
The main purpose of this article is to understand the relation between the usage of smartphones , family life and anxiety. This topic has been selected as there were many types of research that have taken place earlier over this particular topic (Samaha & Hawi, 2016). A research carried on with the Chinese students was of this opinion that improper usage of the internet via smartphones may lead to a lack of love and affection from the family members. I have also been seen that many of the studies are confirming about the marital disorders between parents as the main cause behind using of this smartphones or internets. Like any other article, this article also has used some of the procedures or methods for gathering the data.
The sampling procedure was used for getting the data for this particular article. The random sampling method was used by selecting a random number of students. They were asked to participate in this survey and were asked to fill up a survey questionnaire. I have seen that about 381 students filled up those questions and have sent it after completing the whole process. So, it is basically a response rate of 54.5 percent (Hawi & Samaha, 2017). So, it is evident from here that the undergraduate students had, made use of the smartphones and the internet connections for filling up these questionnaires.
The average of the age of the respondents was something between 17 to 2 years of age. So, this is basically proving the fact that the usage of smartphones and the internet is quite high among the people belong within this age group. However, the important information regarding the age and the confidentiality of any kinds of information was maintained. There were several instruments used for this research. Some of the instruments are the Smartphone addiction scale short version. Apart from this, the black anxiety inventory was also used that helped in knowing the kinds of problems or anxieties that are faced by the people when they keep on using the smartphones, internet, and many other such social sites. It was seen that the cut off for a male is e1 and 33 for that of women. So, it is evident that some way or the other the risk factor is higher for the females than the males.
The results showed that the undergraduate students that have acre access to the smartphones and the use of social platforms at a random rate are likely to develop this anxiety. However, if they can use the smartphones in a controlled amount then it is less likely for them to develop any such signs of anxiety.
The statistical methods were used for the data analyzing part. This helped in getting a clear result of the relation between the smartphones and the anxiety. It was found that smartphones have entered into our lives and became an integral part of it. So, giving up the usage is not a feasible solution. The parents have to be educated so that they can talk with their children regarding the harmful effects of excessive smartphone uses.
