According to the Erikson’s (1959) theory of psychosocial development, there is an existence of eight prominent stages present throughout the lifecycle. During each stage, the individuals undergo a psychological crisis, which has both positive and negative effect on the personality development (Simply Psychology 2018).
In order to determine, positive impact of development in a child through one of the stages of Erickson’s theory, the stage 3 of the theory is considered, which usually takes place at the play age of a child, between 3 to 5 years. This stage deals with the psychological crisis of initiative vs. guilt in relation to the basic virtue of purpose in a child. At this stage, a sense of purpose is perceived to be quite significant in the child. During this stage, there is a rise of conflict in the child, while they start to establish their control over their environment. They carry out activities of their own choosing. These results in the experience of a conscience that starts to emerge through their choices hence having a positive effect on the development of the child. This helps the preschool children to tackle new tasks and helps them to join new activities. They try to discover new things and make up new games. Their imagination also develops and they learn about the social world (McLeod 2013).
Therefore, the children are seen to have a new sense of purpose thereby promoting positive development in the child. A social group is created where they learn to cooperate with others to achieve shared goals.
