Question:

Discuss About The Easily Affect International Student Than Local Students.

Answer:

Introduction
For so long depression has been known to be a mental health problem and a major social phenomenon among people across all age groups, gender and religious backgrounds. Depression is a phenomenon that affects students as well and it has been considered to be a leading cause of disability in the world (Pescosolido & Martin, 2015). There are several known symptoms that can indicate an individual is suffering from depression. Depression affects both local and international students but it mostly affects the international students. The factors affecting international students are not the same as those affecting the local students and this may contribute to the level of how depression affects them. This essay is a discussion on why depression affects international students than local students. The essay is going to review three articles that are discussing the reasons why international students are affected by depression compared to their local counterpart. Depression is mental problem that affects the learning of students and we should understand what factors make the situation worse among international students in order to promote an equal learning environment for students.
Discussion
The first article that is a discussion among local and international student is titled “Loneliness and International Students: An Australian Study published in 2008 by Erlenawati Sawir, Simon Marginson , psychology , Chris Nyland & Gaby Ramia. This article is relevant since it discusses the result of a depression-based interview that was done among 200 local and international students in Australia. According to the article, the interviews conducted showed that roughly two-thirds of the students had experienced isolation or loneliness with the majority of them being the international students. International students mainly experience loneliness especially during the first few early months because of the loss of contact with their family (Erlenawati Sawir, Chris Nyland & Gaby Ramia, 2008). Loss of network makes the students experience social networks mostly during the early months. The article explains that the loss of contact is severe among the international students compared to the local students and that is the reason why the international students are more affected by depression. Loneliness has always been regarded to be a major factor contributing to depression and that is the reason the international students are most affected by depression. According to the article, there is a type of loneliness affecting these students namely cultural loneliness. The absence of the preferred linguistic or cultural environment is the main factor that triggers this type of loneliness (John, 2007). The article also discusses the coping mechanisms that the students can apply to avoid this loneliness. The article suggests that stronger bonds between local and international students can greatly help reduce the depression among international students.
The second article discussing the effects of depression on international students is titled “International Students and Mental Health” by Helen Forbes-Mewett, Australia Anne-Maree, Sawyer LA published in 2016 by Trobe University and Monash University, Australia. According to this article, health mental problems among the international students were made worse by leaving it in a foreign environment away from home. Although the mental problems affect both the local and international problems, depression is more prevalent among the international students due to the new social and cultural environment. According to US researchers, the number of students both international and local reported or perceived to have mental health problems is very high (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). Most of the international students encounter an adjustment stress as they deal wills their transition to living in Australia. The student’s ability to make an efficacious transition determines their general wellbeing and this directly affects their mental health and their academic performance as well. This stress encountered during the transition into a new culture and environment makes the international students more vulnerable to depression compared to the local students who do not need to undergo any transition. The new students also experience a ‘culture shock’ in terms of new language and unfamiliar teaching techniques. Students will experience stress due to the difficulty in adopting the new language and modes of teaching (Brown, 2008).This makes the international students experience so much depression compared to local students.
The third article addressing this topic is titled “Depression among International Students” by Omodona Oluwakemi Oluwafunmilola documented in April 2012 by Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences. This article gives a comprehensive insight on the various environmental factors that make international students be more affected by depression than the local students. The main factors that contribute to depression among international students are loneliness, language, weather and cultural shock. The institutions are doing as much as they can to reduce these problems but some cannot be avoided since international students come from diverse backgrounds marketing them experience transition challenges. The students can play a bigger role in preventing these factors from affecting them drastically by being friendly with people and seeking information about the new study environment (Omodona, April 2012). The students should make an effort in learning the new language to avowing the language barrier that hinders interpersonal communication thus leading to loneliness. The learning institutions should strive to provide quality services to international students such as offering them extra language classes and cultural lessons to help them cope with the challenges that come with the transition into a new culture. The study shows that lack of familiarity causes international students to experience cultural stress thus causing depression among the students. This problem is experienced by roughly 50% of the international students.

Conclusion
Depression is a common phenomenon among students and it is more prevalent among international students. There are several factors that make the international students more to depression compared to international students. The main factors that contribute to depression among international students are loneliness, language, weather and cultural shock. International students experience loneliness and stress as they make a transition to their new environment. Depression affects the general wellbeing of the students and this has an impact on their mental health as well as their academic performance. Learning institutions should put mechanisms in place to eliminate or reduce the depression among students and more so the international students.
