Questions:
Consider the above quotes in the context of intercultural learning and exploring cultural differences. “Water” refers to the things that we usually take for granted about our reality. What have you become more aware about as a result of your intercultural learning- in terms of your water- since starting this subject?
Assumptions of others
Discuss whether you or someone you know has had a similar experience as portrayed in the film. Describeyour thoughts and reactions to the video itself, as well as your emotions relating to your own personal experiences.
Explore the work that you have completed for this subject to date to see if you can identify any assumptions of others that you may have written about. Discuss your findings.
Practicing border crossing
Your task is to consciously make a decision to interact with another person who you have not communicated with before and who has a different background and life experiences from yourself. Your choice should involve a level of discomfort; a degree of perceived difference is necessary. However, please do ensure your own safety.
Enter a discussion in a spirit of openness. Engage in a conversation of meaning, beyond the basic scripts such as “How are you? Fine. It’s hot today”. Ask open-ended questions that generate genuine responses and promotion of dialogue. Practice listening skills. After the interaction, reflect on the dialogue.
Describe how easy or difficult it was for you to comprehend another individual’s worldview, from their perspective (not yours!). While practicing ‘border crossing’ did you have a chance to understand otherness in its own terms or did you only ‘see’ or acknowledge difference without exploring otherness in more depth?

Assumption of Others
Introduction
There are several assumptions we make every day while meeting other people on a regular basis. When we meet other people, even before talking to someone we make some amount of assumptions after seeing their face or appearance. Even though every one of us is unique on our own, we cannot stop making assumption about others. According to me, all of us have this inherent tendency of being self centered, therefore when we meet another person we love to make assumption about other people as if we are already capable to know about their personality from their appearances. We also think that we can understand everything before someone has uttered something with their mouth. In this case, the similar thing happened to one of my friend who came to Australia for academic purpose.
Discussion
In this video, we see a man and a woman talking where the man asks the woman repeatedly about her origin, as she does not look like an American. The man who himself is not an native American, claims himself to be one as he looks like a typical American. This kind of situation arises several times in the daily lives of the migratory students who stays in a different continent and they are several times asked about their origin. However, according to me the concept of origin is quite vague in its very stereotypical idea. Even if someone has an Asian origin in his or her family, but he or she is born in a different continent, grew up there, mixes up with that culture, for this individual this is her home, not the other continent where she has a distant family origin. My friend, Ju Li is born and brought up in Sydney, Australia as her family members had shifted in Australia long before she was even born. However, her mother is an Australian woman, but Ju Li looks like an Asian, therefore she has been asked several times about her origin. She cannot even speak Chinese language as her parents do not practice that at home. However, from her Asian looks, many people assume her to be a Chinese and start asking inquisitive questions.
Conclusion
Just as we find in the video, several Asian originated people face such situations in their daily life. This is also because most of our motivation lies in our own assumptions. Therefore breaking the practice of making the assumptions may seem to be a difficult one for most of the people. We should understand that the way we are making assumptions about other people, others are doing the same too. I hope no one likes to be judged every time they are facing someone. Avoiding the practice of assuming about others may sound cliché, but this kind of behavior does pay back, as the sensibility of that individual stands out from the other superficially polite people.
Practicing Of Border Crossing
Introduction
Meeting strangers in our daily lives is quite common for every one of us. Every day we meet various people from different background, different city, and different family structures publicly. However most of the times we do not try to connect with them or to talk to them. The feeling of discomfort and uneasiness come in our way to initiate the conversation. Also from our playground days, we have been told by our parents, teachers and other caregivers not to talk with any strangers, rather to avoid the everyday interaction. However, for this task, I had decided to initiate talking to strangers in public and avoid the sense of discomfort. Therefore I tried initiating conversation with people I meet every day while going to the university. However, I failed initially as most of them were least interested, but then I met an old man who was going to meet his grandchildren. He felt nice from his appearance therefore I started talking to him.
Discussion
I made some open ended questions such as regarding weather and transport. We were standing at the bus stand and the bus was late. Therefore I was being a little impatient, so was he. Therefore we started talking. I was mostly listening to him talking. He was talking about his family and how excited he was as he was meeting his grandchildren after a long time because of their exams. We got one common thing, as we went to the same high school. Therefore he was also telling me about his experiences while in the school. From the conversation we had I could easily understand few things about him. While reflecting on the past conversation I could understand that he is an independent man who does not like to depend on others. He has some physical problems due to his age, but still he is not ready to take help from anyone, rather he likes to live alone and independent. He is always connected with his other family members as they also worry about their health, but he decided not to stay with them and respect his independence. His sense of independence had gained my attention, as this is not quite common among the elder people. In that age, they mostly tend to be dependent on others but his sense of independence did not let him do that. Rather he seems to be quite happy staying alone.
Conclusion
From this conversation, I could easily comprehend the man’s world view as he talked quite a lot. However, for me it was easier to carry the conversation forward as we got a common factor between us. However both of us were from a different background and has a huge age gap between us, but he still seemed to be open minded and progressive according to me. I had a sense of otherness while starting the conversation but he seemed very cooperative. This experience of crossing the border and talking to a stranger was wonderful for me and I could see the difference between him and the other people of his ages clearly.
