Questions:
1. Briefly describe the story, explain when and how it broke, and indicate to what extent and why, in your view, it was ‘news’.2. Analyse and compare the coverage in the newspaper and on the website. You might consider the angle, structure, language and tone of the writing itself (in headlines and body copy). You might also consider things such as placement, presentation, extent of coverage, interactivity, searchability, etc.
3. Describe conclusions about what the distinctions and similarities in coverage tell us about: a. The readership of the paper and the websiteb. The characteristics of print and online news publishing
Answers:
Introduction
An article published by the Press Association of the Daily mail on the 4th of April 2016, reported that majority number of teachers all over the country were planning on quitting the profession altogether (Dailymail.co.uk, 2017). Two of the main reasons for this occurrence have been cited as the hint of increase in workload and degrading standard of personal and professional life. Moreover, many members of the Association of Teachers and lecturers (ATL) after their annual conference in Liverpool on Monday have stated that increasing disrespect for the profession, especially amongst the youth, is very much likely to make people reconsider entering this profession. As stated by the general secretary of the ATL, the government failed to complete its teacher training and recruitments goals, hence making quite a large number to leave their jobs. There is a shortage of staff along with the malpractice of forcing teachers to teach subjects for which they’re not qualified. A spokesperson from a department on education has defended the government by assuring the ATL as well as the public that the teaching profession is of the utmost importance to the government and they will take the required steps to solve the issues and answer the complaints (Dailymail.co.uk, 2017).
Angle
When comparing the angle of the coverage of the story in the newspaper and their website, one can clearly notice that the online version of the story was precise and concise, stating the necessary facts and statements of the parties involved. The print version of the story on the other hand was much more detailed, articulate and engaging for a regular reader. It was also academically profound and informative for further social inquiry.
Structure
There is no well defined structure of the article published online whereas the one in the newspaper not only has a catchy headline but also a certain abstract to the story being covered ending with a well rounded continuity which suggests the reader that there will be a follow up to the events of the situation being described (Obrien, 2017).
Language
The language of the online copy is mostly composed of a mediocre choice of words and could be termed to quite an extent as the slang use of the English language but the fact of reality is that this is the very language used by a majority of the common people and thus is seems more likeable as well as readable to the many, making the electronic version of dispersing the news a much faster way to reach out to maximum number of people (Dailymail.co.uk, 2017). The language used in the print version is old school in many ways. It is not only aiming to create awareness but also a certain standard of readership, making it the choice of academia as well as politics. The very jargon used in the newspapers made sure that this issue of our teaching profession was considered seriously by the concerned authorities (Anon, 2017).
Tone
The tone of reporting used in the online article was simple as if merely stating an occurrence. Although it mentioned the necessary facts but failed to grab the attention required to cause an action in its regard. The newspaper on the other hand, advocated the case of ATL in much enthusiastic manner while calling out to the academic elites and the government for their ignorance regarding the condition of our educational institutions (Anon, 2017).
Placement
The online article had barely few minutes of life before it got replaced by another report of another event, thus getting lost in a sea of stories whereas the newspaper gave it a defined spatial dimension making it more permanent in the psyche of its readers (Dailymail.co.uk, 2017).
Presentation
The presentation of the online version could be termed as a rough blueprint of the print version. In more simple words, it was merely an appetizer before the main course (Obrien, 2017).
Coverage and Interactivity
Although the website was quick to report this situation and bring attention to it, it was the newspaper that did the official investigation into the whole situation by gathering anecdotal accounts of teachers and staff members from various schools and colleges; also, asking for an active participation of the public opinion through the editorial section, thus ensuring a follow up on the story. Public participation is quite possible in the virtual world but the gist of the issue at hand gets lost in unarticulated comments especially in the form of tweets (Dailymail.co.uk, 2017).
Conclusion
When it comes to the character of the readership of the print and electronic media, it is quite plain that the former is a choice for people who genuinely want to be aware of the happenings in the world whereas the later, though informative and more accessible for the majority is merely an attempt towards gathering information regarding something specific as quickly as possible with no interest whatsoever in the larger share of the current affairs (Obrien, 2017). As for dispersing the information, both the mediums are equally adept at it. A piece of news when printed in a newspaper becomes more tangible and real as though it has a life of its own. On the other hand, when it comes online, it is simultaneously everywhere, twitter, face book etc. Nobody can escape it. There is no better way to get the youth involved than simply putting something online.
