Project 1; 2; 4 40% Week 5 26 July Individuals Gradebook Assessment description Develop a performance appraisal form for a job in an organizational unit of your choice. Assessment aims By successfully completing this assessment task you will demonstrate the ability to: apply the current state of performance and compensation management decision making. apply recent theory and research to inform performance and compensation management decisions. critically analyse organisational performance and compensation management systems and effectively communicate recommendations for improvement. Work collaboratively with colleagues when undertaking these activities. The development of a performance appraisal form is an authentic task that you might be required to perform in the workplace. It requires you to integrate what you know about the theory of performance appraisal with the analysis of a real organisational unit and produce a functional performance appraisal document which is tailored for a specific context. In this assessment, you are required not only to develop a performance appraisal form, but also a written explanation of the development process you used. The feedback for this task will focus on how well you have: 1) identified the key problems or incidents in the case; 2) applied HR concepts to solve the case study problem; 3) made recommendations that best fit with the organization’s internal and external operating environment; 4) constructed a compelling argument employing primary sources supporting the recommendations made; and 5) followed referencing conventions. Assessment instructions Begin the process by clearly identifying a context for your performance appraisal form, ensure you identify organizational strategic objectives. Identify the job and the organizational unit where it is located. You should choose a job and organizational unit that you are familiar with. You must be able to interview someone who is very familiar with the job and organisational unit. It is important to have access to someone who has first-hand experience with the job. As a suggestion, if you are currently working, you may want to choose a peer or colleague and complete this assessment task in the context of your workplace by focusing on your colleague’s role. Alternately, you may want to talk to a family member or friend and focus on their job and workplace. Conduct a job analysis for the job. You are expected to interview one or more incumbents in the position and, ideally, the supervisor of the position. Note that the job analysis and performance appraisal processes should be representative rather than exhaustive. Be mindful of the word counts and don’t get bogged down in excessive detail. You must develop an ORIGINAL, simple, concise performance appraisal form (using a current performance appraisal form is not suitable). Prepare a report which describes the development of the performance appraisal form. The report does not have the same structure as a traditional report that you may have prepared for other courses. In this case, the report should include the following headings: Context (Identify the business unit’s strategy). Job Analysis (Explain key tasks, duties, and responsibilities of the job). Performance Appraisal System (Describe the performance appraisal form that you have designed and explain how the performance appraisal: (a) fits with the business unit’s strategy; and (b) will add value to the organization) Justify your choice of performance appraisal system using relevant theory, provide both advantages and disadvantages and compare to at least one other system. References (include a reference list for your report) Performance Appraisal Form (Attach/copy and paste the performance appraisal form you have developed as the last section of the document) Submit the document via the course site. Assessment advice and resources The components of this assessment task correspond to learning tasks in Weeks 2-3. Academic integrity As with all academic writing you must be careful about how you represent and use other people’s ideas. Paraphrase the key ideas from your sources used or properly quote them using the recommended referencing conventions (see the section on referencing in the study resources http://online.unisa.edu.au/current-students/study-resources/ ). Feedback The submission will be marked and feedback provided relative to the following criteria: The report describes organizational strategy and demonstrates a thorough Job Analysis and strong alignment between the job analysis and the performance evaluation form. (40%) The report applies HR theory and concepts to justify the chosen system of the performance appraisal form by discussing the pros and cons of the chosen system and at least one alternative choice. (40%) The report is correctly structured, referenced, precise and convincing. (10%) The references used are from credible academic/ practitioner sources, minimum 4. (10%) See the rubric linked to the submission site.
