TASK: Compose a short paper on the background, structure, and theme of one Passage in the New Testament. You may choose any Passage of the New Testament you wish. My passage is “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 The paper should attend specifically to these four questions/areas: 1- Discuss briefly the questions of authourship, date, and provenance (i.e location and audience) of the book in which the passage is located. 2- How does the passage fit into the book in whihch it is located? Or, how does the passage relate to the overall strucuture of the book in which it is located? 3- What is the major theme or proposition (i.e. idea) developed in the passage? 4- How is the theme or proposition developed in this passage and the rest of the New Testament? Use of the secondary sources: 1- To answer questions 1-3 you should consult two commentaries on the passage. a) one should be the relevant chapter from the New Interpreters’s Bible. Nashville: Abingdon, 1994-2004] 2- To assist with the questions 3-4 you should consult one journal article in the passage. 3- To assist with question 4 you should consult one theological dictionary to assist with tracing the theme of the passage.
