Assignment 2Over the last two centuries industrialisation has grown significantly, so called Industrial Revolution has made some nations and corporations enormously wealthy. Moreover, it has brought convenience and more comfortable life to many people. However, most of the large businesses have caused significant impact on environment that will probable lead to climate change and scarcity of natural resources. It is important to large corporations start taking actions on these issues before it is too late. Prior to Industrial Revolution most of the households lived in rural areas at open field villages in generations farming their grains and vegetables to sustain their life. If there was any surplus then they trade them at the local market where local farmers, carpenters and blacksmiths, etc get together and exchange or trade their goods. There were no large factories during this time and goods were created by hand. However, later water and steam power were introduced that has changed everything. Then, great number of factories were built and has created factory system which brings people and machine together in the factory to producing mass production of goods. Many people including women and children were leaving their farms to come to factory to work (Jensin, Micheal.C, 1993). Mills and factories led to growth of cities since people came to factories looking for work. The more people moved cities the more cities were populated and grew. Steam engine machine revolutionized agriculture as well and became more popular in railroad train and steam engine boat for mass transportation of goods as well as allowing people travel long distances. Societies have shifted from rural to more urban lifestyle. According to Vries (2004) Industrial Revolution was all about innovation under the philosophy of creating machinery or goods faster, easier and cheaper. Since steam engine uses coal or wood to produce energy it created smokes in the large industrial cities and the air pollution caused serious health problems. Large scales of coal and iron mines were developed to supply industries due to steam powered machine’s growth. And it has been creating massive scale of environmental damages all around the world.Spence (2014) stated that especially last few decades people’s lifestyle has significantly changed because of technological changes as well as immense consumerism. Most of the businesses are mainly focused on maximizing their profits and in turn it creates scarce in natural resources and vast amount of pollution. Large corporations extend the company by building their factories in some countries where rules and regulation are not strict against exploitation of natural resources as well as exploitation of child labour. Industrialisation, technological advancement indeed has brought comfort and convenience to people which looks as if it is for common good of the people however, in contrary if it is costing earth by depriving natural resource and polluting water and air is against human flourishing (Tiley, 2000). Wastage is one of the big issues companies face with and some companies do not have any mean to finding ways to dispose of their waste carefully or even way to recycle properly. Some factories dump their wastage into rivers and polluting water that go directly into the local households. Another issue is that sustainable development of raw materials businesses uses to make their products such as wood. Cutting down trees is controversial specially if the companies are doing nothing to trying to replace what they are taking. Each of these factors end up contributing climate change and impacting many aspects such as bio diversity, destruction of ozone layer and many more. Such issues cannot be fixed overnight. Public hope companies conduct their businesses ethically and out of Corporate social responsibility Dahlsrud (2008) However, the question is how far companies willing to go protect their environment. That led to environmental ethics in business. Environmental ethics are simply defined as the responsibility of a company protect the local environment where it operates in which are lower emission, protecting wild life, cleaner oceans and sustainable resource use for natural resources. However, the problem is companies need to pay extra money to hire people and put their time and effort to develop such pro-environmental system which they hardly ever do it.Assessment 3 Description: Extending from assignment 2, write a 1200 word paper that briefly critiques a global issue where shared responsibility for the common good is not being realised (approx. 300 words) and then, propose ways to address this challenge (approx.. 900 words). (NB: Emphasis is on your proposed ways to address the challenge because some of the critique will have been covered in assignment 2). Please Note: In order to achieve a higher grade you will need to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the Common Good and its relationship to other CST principles, particularly Human Dignity. Your discussion should demonstrate how Advocacy and Community Engagement may contribute to your proposed solution.
