Assessment 2: ESSAY: Reflection on differences in media Overview We live in a world that is characterised by differences. This is greatly evident in a region like Greater Western Sydney; one of the fastest growing regional econmies in Australia. But how are differences manifested in the way in which the media represents Australia? Commonly, people may develop their understanding of how society operates through their consumption of popular culture, offset by the way in which popular media conveys such messages. In this essay, you will be required to undertake the following practical activities before writing your essay: * Mindfully watch a total of three hours of commercial television (eg Channel 7, 9, 10), whilst taking notes on the following: 1) How is cultural differences represented? 2) How can this uphold dominant discourses and possibly disempower difference? * Also mindfully watch another three hours of non-commercial television (eg SBS & NITV), and take notes on the following: 3) Why does the inclusiveness of cultual differences promote a better opportunity for alternative voices to be heard? 4) How can such media outlets help develop practical strategies to promote working with cultural differences? (use examples from research / policy / practice; which may include points developed from the REFOCUS discussions undertaken in tutorials) * Construct your essay based on the 4 questions; with ample use of references to support your written work.
