Think about Australian Foreign Policies since World War II. What was the context of the signing of the ANZUS Treaty? What were Australia’s concerns during the Cold War? What about the post- 9/11 era?
2nd Part of the Question: Shared interests / tradition?
In International Relations, we usually talk about strategic and economic interest. Strategic interests relate to security, stability within the region, peace and capacity to defend ourselves when conflict rises. Are Australia’s and US’s security interests aligned? Have they been aligned throughout the post-war period? What about our economic interest? See what the trade relationship is. Most importantly, also look at US Foreign investment in Australia. What does all this mean about shared interest? Is this all that the alliance is based on? Do the countries have shared values? Shared history?
Look for 3 key points, figure out the big picture and then you will have your thesis. These 3 key points will guide your research.
